As I write this, I'm watching a brief but intense rainstorm from a bar in our hotel. The worst thing that has happened to me all day was that the breakfast buffet ran out of eggs Benedict and I had to wait ten minutes to get one. It's likely nothing worse than than will happen until tomorrow.
Even with the rain, it's stunningly beautiful. The only ugly part of Lana'i is the black plastic you'll see everywhere they used to grow pineapples:
The plastic will be here, well, forever. But I seem to have lost that portion of my character that allows me to work myself into a high environmental dudgeon while staying at a Four Seasons resort.
We've been eating, drinking, loafing, and reading. It's perfect. We rented a jeep a few days ago and took the tour we took fifteen years on our honeymoon, to the Garden of the Gods and to a secluded beach. This time, the dirt road was in better repair, and I DID NOT get the jeep stuck in a mid-road rut and DID NOT get covered in red dirt that took two showers to wash off and DID NOT have to be rescued by a car of bemused hunters. So, I have that going for me.
The Garden of the Gods was a lot windier than I recalled. But that didn't prevent us from staring, open-mouthed, at the contrast between the Martian-red rockscape and the insolent blue of the ocean behind it.
We continued from the Garden down the rocky trail to Polihua Beach (Polihua is an ancient term meaning "Ow! My Kidneys!") The view as astounding. But the beach is made up of very coarse sand shot through with billions of pulverized shells, and the windward-side breezes, when they rise, propel it in a stinging rebuke against bare legs. It's not a place to sunbathe. It's a place, again, to stand around gape-jawed and stare.
So rather then having our picnic there, we drove back up the trail and had it in the gardens of a Victorian hunting lodge:
Must go. They've just opened the bar.
