I just got back from Tropic Thunder, perhaps the funniest movie I have seen this year. It is a big, sloppy comedy that makes merciless fun of actors, movies and itself. It's self aware satire. It's the Shatner of movies. The beginning of the film introduces us to the main characters from trailers for their latest movies. It's a clever device to begin this ersatz "Start of Darkness." The standout of the film is a long cameo by a huge star that I normally can't stand. He steals the entire movie.
The controversy around this movie focuses on it's treatment of Ben Stiller's character's ill-fated Oscar bait picture "simple Jack" where he plays a handicapped man-child. Where were these protests during Radio or I Am Sam? It's strange to me that people are more upset with the movie using the word "retarded" than they are about Robert Downey Jr. spending most of the film in black face. Perhaps it is because the film overtly addresses how ridiculous that is, and only subtly points out how silly Simple Jack is.
In any case, if you are looking for a bastard combination of The Player, Apocalypse Now, Rambo and Spinal Tap go see this movie today. I don't want to spoil any of the gags, so this review is pretty simple. I'll be back later to discuss child cruelty, Jews running Hollywood, Crocodile Dundee being a national treasure, the international Heroin trade and how absolutely insane and fearless Jack Black is later.
