I've written in the past about how much I hate political mailers (especially those borderline fraudulent ones that purport to be from a certain party, but offer candidates access if they buy their way on..) but tomorrow's election has taken the cake. Now usually, I do a little post on how I'm voting in the upcoming election, but this time I'm going to explain why I almost decided not to vote.
June 3rd, California has a statewide election. There are two opposed ballot measures, each addressing eminent domain a little differently. I've written about Prop 98 previously, and I'm voting against it. I'm probably voting for 99. But, that's not why I'm writing.
My district is voting to replace ex Speaker of the House (and incredibly corrupt politician) Don Perata. The two main candidates are both Democrats. They (and their proxies) have engaged in one of the ugliest campaigns I can remember. For the past 2 weeks I have had at least one mailer accusing one or the other of everything short of kidnapping the Lindbergh baby. Wilma Chan tells me Loni Hancock is a tool of the insurance companies, Hancock tells me that Chan is responsible for our failing test scores. I especially enjoy the fliers telling me how great their environmental records are. I guess they hope that we are all recycling the tens of mailers we received.
It's to the point where I am completely turned off by both candidates. I have actually met Wilma Chan, and she was a very nice lady, and had some great ideas. I think she has been an effective politician for my county, and normally I would be happy to vote for her. Loni Hancock has the only endorsement I really care about, Barbara Lee's, and is clearly the more progressive candidate. Still, I am so disgusted by this ridiculous election that I don't think I will vote for either of them. If that is indeed my choice, I'll also write each of them a letter telling them exactly why I did so.
I can only imagine the level of my anger if I had a home phone. I'm sure the calling banks are even more absurd than the mailers.
