Via Andrew Sullivan, some red meat for economic conservatives — an advocate of a money-free society, having recently launched a walking expedition from England to India, is brought up short by the implacable unhelpfulness of the French. Says the source BBC article:
Mark Boyle, 28, who set out four weeks ago with only T-shirts, a bandage and sandals, hoped to rely on the kindness of strangers for food and lodging.
But, because he could not speak French, people thought he was free-loading or an asylum seeker.
After the victory of caging several free meals in England — which Boyle seemed to feel vindicated his theory that money is unnecessary — this was a crushing blow:
But in one of his last entries, he wrote: "…not only did no one not speak the language, they had also seen us as just a bunch of freeloading backpackers, which is the complete opposite of what the pilgrimage is really about.
"That really scared us and given that we now were pretty much out of food, hadn't slept in days and were really cold, we had to reassess the whole situation."
Gosh, if he had just gotten a little further. I'm sure all the other countries from Calais to India would have been much more sympathetic to unwashed penniless Brits who didn't speak the language.
Every day there are stories that make me feel all warm inside. Sometimes they are about rescued puppies or acts of simple kindness or heroism. And it's good they make me feel warm. Other times I feel vaguely guilty and nasty for getting the warm feeling from a story. This is one of those stories. It's at least as good as a story about puppies being heroically saved by an act of compassion. But even if I'm a bad person, at least I didn't get rebuffed for being a lazy illiterate freeloader by the French.
