Video games, as we know, are evil and pornographic. That's why we can expect upstanding citizens like Jack Thompson to rail against them and erstwhile politicians like Hillary Clinton to warn about games released several years ago.
That's why it takes the mad skillz of Fox News to carry it too far.
Fox News ran a segment about EA's popular new crpg Mass Effect, a game that makes me lust for the Xbox 360. Fox, with its unerring knack for promoting the public ritual suicide of its own credibility, asked for comment from Cooper Lawrence, a "self-help" author who admitted she had not played the game. She had heard real nasty stuff about it, though, including that it included frontal nudity and explicit sex:
“Here’s how they’re seeing women: They’re seeing them as these objects of desire, as these, you know, hot bodies. They don’t show women as being valued for anything other than their sexuality. And it’s a man in this game deciding how many women he wants to be with.”
After a few days of the wrath of net geekdom — including Amazon reviews of her self-help book in which the reviewers admitted they had not read it but gathered from her that this failure was no impediment to trashing it — Cooper admitted she had been full of shit:
In an interview on Friday, Ms. Lawrence said that since the controversy over her remarks erupted she had watched someone play the game for about two and a half hours. “I recognize that I misspoke,” she said. “I really regret saying that, and now that I’ve seen the game and seen the sex scenes it’s kind of a joke.
“Before the show I had asked somebody about what they had heard, and they had said it’s like pornography,” she added. “But it’s not like pornography. I’ve seen episodes of ‘Lost’ that are more sexually explicit.”
Cooper's "Oops … tee hee!" reaction just lowered the glass ceiling of journalism about a yard.
How sub-moronic was the story? Well, let's put it this way — Jack Thompson, the Florida attorney (for the moment) and mouth-frothing tin-foil-hatted crusader against video game violence and filth, thinks Fox contrived the controversy and is full of shit.
Congrats, Fox News. You're less credible on gaming than Jack Thompson.
