Today, we consider what is real and what is not. Please note that if I had succeeded in completing my dual major of English, I undoubtedly would have said what is "real" and what is not. However, a dual English major required a language course, all of which met at 8:00 a.m. So I remain a generic poli-sci graduate like ten million other grasping lawyers. This handicap prevents me from joining in that roughly 40% of conversations with co-blogger David that involve words like "epistemology."
But I digress. How can you tell what is real and what is not? Well, the Internet showed initial promise but is quite frankly of limited use. It's easy to find sites that claim to be authoritative, but even a cursory inspection generates grave doubt. 9/11 Truther sites, UFO and Bigfoot fora, and Ron Paul for President blogs all pimp their message with misplaced unwavering confidence.
So it's quite frankly refreshing to find sites devoted to telling you that stuff is bullshit. Snopes is one famous such site, but probably already too familiar to you to tempt you into wasting your Friday afternoon. But in a similar vein, please enjoy The Museum of Hoaxes, a fascinating and extensive site documenting both famous and obscure hoaxes as well as notable practical jokes.
It's bad enough to make up a hoax and get caught out. But what if you make up something that people are supposed to know is fake, and you can't even interest anyone in pretending to believe in it for the sake of entertainment? That's sad. But frequently funny-sad. Hence Gone and Forgotten, a blog devoted largely to the legions of comic-book superheroes that lasted one or two issues and then faded into well-deserved obscurity, as well as various comic-book assaults on narrative logic. As I understand it the proprietor used to have a more complete site, which has since been closed, but he seems to be rebuilding it here. Go go Skateman!
