Recently I was reminded of Dr. Derek Smart, one of the more unusual characters to whom the internet has granted more than 15 minutes of fame. For those who have not directly encountered the Supreme Commander, Smart is a designer and programmer of games for the personal computer. His games, most notably Battlecruiser 3000, fit into the same "sim" niche as Microsoft's Flight Simulator, except that Smart is attempting to simulate what it would be like to command and fly a space navy capital ship in the far future. This is a wet dream for geeks like me though I must admit that the actual games aren't my cup of tea.
But the Battlecruiser Games aren't the source of Smart's fame. They're merely the vehicle that allowed him to become famous, famous for engaging in some of the most vicious and destructive flamewars ever to scorch usenet and the world wide web. Now lots of us have engaged in flamewars and the like. Or at least, we think of them as flamewars. But whatever little fires we've started, they're nothing to Dr. Smart, who has set galaxies ablaze with the heat of a thousand exploding suns.
