Her?

Culture

I've probably posted this before in other locales, but it deserves to be viewed by all.  After careful consideration, I've decided that despite it's limited run, Arrested Development is indeed the greatest sitcom of all-time.  I love me some Seinfeld, but Seinfeld gets old after a while.  I've seen every episode of this show literally dozens of times, and they all still make me laugh.  And I'm still finding new things that I've never noticed before.  Enjoy.

Back in the Saddle (again)

Gaming

TWO posts in one day? Armageddon is nigh. I bring you my first impressions of the newly minted Guitar Hero: Aerosmith. I'm a reasonably big fan of Aerosmith, at least in their pre-butt rock days. Pandora's Box is probably the most played non-Pink Floyd related content on my ipod. I'm not Mike (a much bigger Aerosmith fan than I, even though I bought this game and he didn't), but I'm not some My Chemical Romance-loving emo fruitcake that doesn't know good rock when he hears it.

First impressions after the fold…

Good Riddance Michael Gagnon

Irksome

Sometimes you should know better than to click on news stories that you know in advance are going to bother you. From CNN, the original headline was somewhat misleading "Drunken Driver gets 43 years for killing family". He didn't get the whole family though. A father and mother were traveling home after celebrating Christmas and had their six kids in the car. The 24-year old drunk driver was driving down the interstate in his pickup – in the wrong direction. He slammed into their minivan head on, killing the mother and four of the children. The father and two of the kids survived – if you want to call it that. I cannot imagine.

This is the paragraph that got me:

The minivan was rounding a curve when the truck came directly at the family. Both drivers tried to avoid each other, but the crash ripped open one side of the van, hurtling some of the victims into the road and scattering toys, stuffed animals and bits of gift wrap.

Simply horrendous. Michael Gagnon is 24, and will be rotting in a cell somewhere at least until his mid-60's. Good.

The Sky is (Not?) Falling

Politics & Current Events

My worlds just collided. One of my favorite columnists at ESPN is the author of Tuesday Morning Quarterback over on their Page 2, Gregg Easterbrook. Am I the only one that didn't know that he is a member of the Brookings Institute, a contributing editor to The New Republic and The Atlantic Monthly, and a editorial contributor to the Wall Street Journal, and author of a book called "The Progress Paradox: How Life Gets Better While People Feel Worse"?

I guess I shouldn't have stopped reading when I got to the "In addition to writing TMQ…" part.

The Counter-Offensive Has Begun

Effluvia

It does seem vaguely odd to put this here on this site, because, well, this isn't Octopus Overlords. But, this site was started by people that passed through those halls, and to a man we understand the threat that we face from the tentacled denizens of the watery deep. Our species has not been idle. Hopefully our nefarious plans won't backfire…

If You Ignore Everyone Else, I'm the Most Active Blogger

Politics & Current Events

I've decided that I am going to employ Hillary Clinton logic to declare that I am by far the most active blogger, and that since I have the most blog posts on this site, I am the most logical candidate to be declared the Supreme Ruler of Popehat. Explanations after the fold…

I would not want to be Harold Ickes today.

Politics & Current Events

I'm not a terribly big fan of Rep. Wexler. But damn did he just skewer Harold Ickes in that meeting. And he also gave one of the Clinton supporters from CA a good smashing. She wanted to know why a full restoration of the FL delegation wouldn't be unifying – to which Wexler correctly pointed out "I wish you would have asked that question last year". Ouch. Her explanation was even more ridiculous "I voted to strip them of 100% of their delegation because I couldn't predict that Floridians would be interested in the Presidential race."

I'm an Idiot

Quick Update on "Very Bad Things"

Effluvia

My wife was able to ask around and find out what happened. Apparently the little girl fell, and got knocked unconscious. She may or may not have had seizures. After a weekend of tests, she has been declared ok. My son's coach has probably aged 10 years in the last two days. I'm surprised that I don't have my kids living in bubbles yet.

Hell Freezes Over

Effluvia, Life

Based in no small part on my apparent man-crush on Sen. Barack Obama, it will come as no surprise that I am no particular fan of Paul Krugman of NY Times Op-Ed fame. He is a staunch advocate of Billary, and of late, that's all I've actually read of him. Luckily his most recent op-ed piece hooked me with the title, before I saw the by line.

The Hidden Cost of the Mortgage Crisis

Effluvia

I saw one of the strangest things the other day.  My wife and I decided to take a walk around our development to get some exercise as the weather has been steadily improving.  We've been thinking about some improvements to our property (adding a deck, fencing in the yard, etc.), so we were admiring (or mocking) some of the choices that our neighbors have made in that regard.  Towards the end of the walk, we noticed that one of the houses had recently gone into foreclosure and was abandoned.

Comedic Timing

Humor, Life

The measure of comedic genius is all in the timing and delivery. I was putting my 6-year old to bed the other night, and while he's a pretty funny kid – most of his comedic energy is spent on class clown, goofy behavior. His humor has always been about a look or had a physical element – which is what I would expect from a 6-year old. He doesn't have the experience to deliver Dennis Miller wit or Denis Leary sarcasm. Which is what made his performance the other night so unexpected.

Buyer's Remorse

Politics & Current Events, WTF?

We've all heard the phrase recently in relation to the Obama campaign. We've all probably seen the articles that describe Obama Comedown Syndrome. Well, I find myself waking up on March 5, 2008 and I'll be honest. I'm damn well feeling some buyer's remorse. Read on.
