What Was That About Being Doomed to Repeat It?

Politics & Current Events

NATO is looking for more troops for Afghanistan, and showing the sensitivity one would expect, one of their first stops was Russia. Hmm. I seem to remember something about Russia & Afghanistan way back.. What was it. Oh yeah, that was when we tried to “give them a Vietnam” by having the CIA massively fund the same folks that are now trying to blow us up. Delicious!

How quickly do you think the Russians (politely, of course) hold up their middle finger?

That wasn’t Russia that we screwed – it was the Soviet Union. Totally, totally different.

C’mon, it’s not like the guy was a KGB agent. Wait, what? Oh. Well, it’s not like the bad old days where they went around assassinating people in Lond… Polonium, you say? Frankly, they’ve rolled things back far enough in Moscow that the Russians are probably itching to send troops back to Afghanistan, just to round out the zeitgeist.
Oh well, at least the Sandanistas aren’t DANNY ORTEGA WHAT?
[going to have a lie down.]

“having the CIA massively fund the same folks that are now trying to blow us up…”

This is a lie; I don’t care how many times it is repeated, it’s still a lie and I will answer it. The CIA suppprted the mujahideen resistance, which included everyone in Afghanistan that wasn’t a Soviet collaborator: Shi’ites, Tajiks, Uzbeks, Hazaras, Pashtuns, Turkmens, and more. The Taliban is a Pashtun-only Sunni force which developed from a splinter group founded after the Soviets left.
