PC Police Are Killing The Ancient Art Of Minstrelsy

Television, WTF?

Stuffed shirt leftwing elitist Harry Connick Jr. evidently has no sense of humor.  Watch as he imposes his cheerless political correctness on this wholesome Australian television audience.

You may view Connick's overreaction to this innocent bit of fun at about the four minute mark.  Cheers to the host for standing up to Connick and explaining the humor. And cheers to the brave Australian commenters at Youtube, like "uaapd", who points out:

Clearly, it was a PARODY, not an attack on the Jacksons personally, or anyone else, black, white or green. How's your economy going – no recession here. In case the yanks hadn't noticed, you aren't the centre of the universe, but we have sufficient self esteem to ignore aspects of your culture that offends us. Please do the same.

and "doingitlive1" for this:

I was going to write a whole lot of crap but it comes down to one thing really…."get f**ked Harry, I am sick of uptight, politically correct w&nkers" I was offended by the fact that the yanks elected BUSH as president…now that is offensive world wide. …..If your too uptight to get it please stay on your side of the hemisphere and please please please stop starting all the wars

And anyway, it's not as though there are black people in Australia.  At least none who can afford a television.

Does this mean Ted Danson will be moving to Australia?

I dunno… I *hate* PC crap.. but I think Harry and the host both handled that perfectly.

I think you are misreading Patrick here, Marc.

Quoting youtube comments? The fish in that barrel aren't even moving.

There is a wrongness to this whole situation that you can't even begin to imagine just from this 6:00 clip. My schadenfreude is in overdrive today.

Hey Hey It's Saturday was once a ratings juggernaut for the Nine Network during the '70s and '80s. By the end of its' run it was tired, dated and no one found it funny any more. 20 years later people power comes to the rescue. A facebook group is created to Bring back Hey Hey It's Saturday. On the back of a few thousand members a grass roots movement is born. Lazy entertainment journalists whose only skill is cutting and pasting press releases pick up the story and it makes the news. Daryl Somers (the host) doesn't have a gig right now and goes into overdrive to pick up the buzz and some idiot with a pony tail and a jacket over his t-shirt and jeans gives it the green light.

All the while forgetting just why it was cancelled in the first place. It was lazy, it was dated and it just wasn't funny any more.

So it comes back as 2 specials and the first one rates it's socks off as nostalgia for a time that never was kicks in. Those too young to have seen it the first time wonder what all the fuss was about. Those of us who remember how mediocre it was say "I told you so" and worry that the large numbers of viewers might see a return series funded, because they did exactly the same show from 20 years ago. It was tired, it was even more dated and it still wasn't funny any more.

I'm glad it happened. It means that this stupid idea for the revival can be killed off once and for all, as well as yet another reminder to the idiots at channel nine that this stuff is just not cool. If I had access to youtube here are work I could link you half a dozen equally offensive items this network has shat out over the last 3 years. (Search for Brendon Fevola and Sam Newman if you are so inclined).

And guys – please don't judge any group by the subset that comments on youtube and/or facebook. The idiot ratio is far too high.

It doesn't take a "stuffed shirt leftwing elitist" or being PC to realize that blackface is incredibly offensive. When done as a satire of over-the-top racism, that's one thing, but this was couched as a "tribute" to Michael Jackson and really wasn't funny in the slightest.

    Good sarcasm, Patrick. Real good.

Teen 1: Oh, here comes that cannonball guy. He's cool.
Teen 2: Are you being sarcastic, dude?
    Teen 1: I don't even know anymore.

Patrick, this post was pure brilliance– as was Ken's reference just above me.

I think we all know what to make of this without me ruining things by stating the obvious.

    But wow, Australia. Wow.
