No worries. Nile actually resigned for a period from his position in the Legaslative Council of New South Wales in order to have a tilt at the Federal Senate. That didn't go so well so he's back to being a curmudgeon in the legaslative council.

Ah, hubris. Is it wrong to enjoy a certain degree of schadenfreude when idiots like this bring down their own career?

Bruce: I still think it would be a big deal simply because of the amount of moralising that, at least from the outside looking in, seems to occur in the U.S. in order to grab the religious vote.

On the topic of the New South Wales Health Minister (John Della-Bosca) I've followed a bit of that story myself, being a Sydney-sider, and in the end I have to say he got what was coming to him. He probably didn't deserve the actual way it came out but he brought about his own demise

He is a married man, married to a Federal Representative no less, and a well known public figure in New South Wales. A lot of people know what he looks like and a lot of people know what his wife looks like. If you:

* are this person and you are locking faces with someone who is obviously not your wife on the couch of a trendy Pub, a public place, where other people are around and can see, or

* you are indulging other people in the details of your affair

You lose the right to privacy. Hell, I'm not a public figure but if I ever reached the moral depths of cheating on a woman I'd be damn sure to keep it out of the public eye, and I'm not anyone important.

As for the morality mast I could think of three off the top of my head, Stephen Fielding, Brian Harradine and Fred Nile. A bit of Google searching for people affiliated with them would undoubtadley turn up more. There are numerous people in the government who do openly talk about their religion like Tony Abbot and even the Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, but your broad assertion is true. Most of them, fortunately, steer well clear of moralising.

I'm not sure politicians are better or worse than the community as a whole when it comes to extra marital shenanigans. If it weren't for the hypocrisy or the conflict of interest would this be as big a deal?

The New South Wales health minister resigned this week when his affair with a young staffer was revealed. However, he has never taken any stand on a moral issue and so perhaps his calls to leave his private life private might have some merit.

I can only think of a single elected official in this entire nation (both state and federal) that has nailed his colors to the christian morality mast – and only snuck in on a preference deal after gathering just 1.5% of the popular vote. As such – we don't generate a lot of these kinds of stories here.

Add a secular "amen." I've got friends who do the whole poly thing. With them, it comes off as charming, albeit a bit tedious at times. (My own theory is that the energy that some folks put into raising kids, they put into multiple romantic relationships -- seems to dominate their lives in the way that the kids dominate mine.) But not at all icky or hypocritical, as there's no "cheating" involved, and nothing to get "caught" at.
