Rick Klau, Blogger Product Manager, has a blog post up about this. His assertion: Blogger only put the warning page up based upon its determination that the blog included images of nudity, which under Blogger's TOS merits such a warning page.

If that's true -- and I haven't viewed the pages of the blog in question myself -- then I think I follow Rick's argument. I'm not sure how Blogger could be in a position to evaluate the subjective motives of people reporting images that, objective, violate TOS.

Of course, this simply brings one back to the personal responsibility argument that if one wants to post such images one ought not sign up to have image-posting rights limited by a TOS like that of Blogger.

Aww, man, why didn't you point us to that blog before? Pure snarky goodness, and now it's dead. Bah. Ah, well, at least I can follow her on Twitter.

Damned turnip molesters, shutting down good sites like that.

While I don't think Google should be regulated (yet!) there's a meta-point here: The internet 2.0 way of "mob rule" is not truly conducive to democracy. And if it becomes possible for mobs to bury information so most people can't see it, we may have a problem.

Sites where crowds vote stories up, like DIGG or Reddit seem to attract the lowest-common-denominator, are full of counter-productive hate speech (just try to say something good about Israel there, or Jews for that matter!), and have a lot of "news" with dubious sources.

(Try it. There’s a button below which will allow you to report this post. If you do so, I’ll know about it and laugh at you, because you’re reporting it to me.)

Actually, you won't find the button any more. I had to disable it because spammers figured out how to use it. Also I got sick of the people reporting you for being mean. Whine, whine, whine.

Though I didn't read Scott as calling for regulation, I also found his calling out of libertarians on this issue to be very odd. What happened here is perfectly libertarian. If you decide not to buy yourself sweaters because you can count on Great Aunt Agnes to send you sweaters for free every Christmas, you're going to be wearing some really ugly sweaters. If you pay for your sweaters, they'll be to your liking.

But I agree with the goal of wide publication of the fact that Google's and Blogger's free lunch is not, in fact, free.
