Effluvia

Next week, I am adopting a little kitten. Followers of the old Popehat may remember that I had an ornery old Siamese cat named Fred that I doted on. After Fred left, I didn't think I would ever have another cat.

Then, a friend found a kitten abandoned, and decided to foster her. They could only do so much, however, and the choice was pretty much me or a shelter. So, Penelope is coming home with me next week.

I went to visit her for the second time last night, and she is cute, precocious, already a little haughty and looks to be some sort of Siamese/Tabby mix that I think the Old Man (as I called Fred) would appreciate.

And yes, this post is pretty much just an excuse to post this picture. As a warning, I have others and am not afraid to use them.

At the risk of belittling the idea of adoption, I present Ethel. Born into poverty on the streets of Brooklyn, she now enjoys brownstone living, organic cat food and the occasional scrap of sushi-grade tuna.

Aw, what a cute kitten. It's great that she's going to a good home.

That is an awesome story Charles! Is Ethel (great name, by the way) your kitty?

Penny was found by a friend tiny, starving and abandoned. They have nursed her to health and been amazing foster parents. They deserve a lot of the credit for Penny's turnaround at 8 weeks. When she comes to me next week, she will be a well fed normal 8 week old kitten.

Yes, Ethel is our cat. For some reason my wife decided to write that post as if we weren't the folks that adopted her. Turns out that she is a pretty good mouser. Not entirely keen on sharing a house with a baby, though.

First time poster. I know nothing about law so I never say anything. Cats on the other hand…

After hearing about Ethel I just had to chime in.
My wife and I also have had the pleasure of adopting a feral. Mister was not friendly toward people at first. He used our backyard to hide and eventually he figured out that we weren't going to hurt him so he stopped running away. After a year of feeding him he jumped on my wife's lap one night for warmth. From then on socializing him was just a matter of patience. Three years later he's the smartest and best behaved cat I have ever had. We even managed to move from Tucson to Austin with him and three other cats. If anyone has the patience and time to devote to socializing a feral cat I highly recommend it, it is very rewarding. You do need to keep unpredictable health problems in mind though. Mister does have FIV and it caused his immune system to attack his teeth which had to be removed. He is much happier with out them though.
