Yeah, but then the lawyers got involved, and putting a dull knife up against the leg was deemed to be sufficient "torture" for legal purposes.

In Ancient Rome, a confession was not considered legally valid unless there WAS torture. Why would anyone tell you the truth if you didn't beat it out of them?
