Pimpin Ain't Easy

Effluvia

Until a couple of days ago, I had never heard or read of the Ancient and Noble Order of the Gormogons. I added them to our blogroll because I return the favor to any blog (subject to policy) that does the same for us.

Now Gormogons is one of my favorite blogs, and will remain a sometimes infuriating daily read.

While I'm on the subject of pimpin, odds are you've never heard Fela Anikulapo Kuti, whose music I play as I type this.  You really should remedy that.  Afropop goes through periods fashionable and obscure, but Fela's music defines the century gone by, like Artie Shaw, Jimmy Castor, and Sergei Prokofiev.

You are seriously the fourth person in the world that I know of who has heard of Fela. One was the guy who wrote the High Times article about him that I read when I was 14. The other was the guy I threw the magazine at after reading it. The other is, naturally, me. Fuckin cool points out the ass.

Fela's a huge star. It's odd to me how many people in the US have never heard of him. Go anywhere in Africa (or many places in Europe) and ask just about anyone on the street.

He was a weird dude. For example, in 1978 he married 27 women one day, then vowed to only keep 12 at any 1 time….

Anyways, gamers should know him from Grand Theft Auto 4. There's a station whose DJ is one of Fela's some, Femi Kuti. He plays 1 of his own songs and 2 Fela Kuti songs on the station.

    He had some amazing music.
