You know I can't set up a drinking game without keeping track of everything right?

PREPARE FOR INSIPID COMMENTARY.

Here's a refresher of the game rules.

10/02/08 – POPEHAT VICE-PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE DRINKING GAME

Everytime a candidate dodges a question… DRINK … if the question is dodged using a copious amount of unrrelated bullshit… DRINK AGAIN AND MAKE A SARCASTIC REMARK .

If the phrase "More research needs to be done" or something related to that… DRINK

Everytime religion is mentioned in a religious context (i.e. no Islamic terrorism)… DRINK

If a candidate interrupts the person talking… DRINK

Condescending phrases like "does not understand" or "simply not accurate" used… DRINK

If Palin's recent displays of horrific stupidity are mentioned (and they shouldn't, because while her competence is certainly fair game, she should be displaying it in response to real questions, not by talking about it)… DRINK

If websites are pimped… DRINK

If any of the following terms are employed in their proper context: "media", "elite", "liberal", "socialism", "reform", "change", "maverick" or "alternate theories to evolution"… DRINK

Campaign slogans are bullshit and thus if used you must… DRINK

If they use the moderator's name in the response… DRINK

If ANY candidate complains about ANYTHING… DRINK

Alright, got my glass of Boodle's. I am watching this on CNN. It's just talking heads talking strategery right now. Good lord I want to start drinking already.

  2. Eric  •  Oct 2, 2008 @5:18 pm

No matter who wins, I think we can all agree we will have many, many entertaining YouTube clips as a result.

  3. Clay  •  Oct 2, 2008 @5:51 pm

Double shots for clear gaffes, I say.

  4. Derrick  •  Oct 2, 2008 @6:05 pm

    Can I call you Joe?

    DRINK!

  5. Derrick  •  Oct 2, 2008 @6:09 pm

"PUTTING THE COUNTRY FIRST" Bullshit campaign slogan.

    DRINK!

  6. Derrick  •  Oct 2, 2008 @6:11 pm

"Fundamentals of the economy are sound" about american workers my ass. Blatant panders deserves a drink and I'll update the rules accordingly.

  7. Derrick  •  Oct 2, 2008 @6:11 pm

HAHAHA, Iliff has called them out on not answering the question.

    DRINK

  8. Derrick  •  Oct 2, 2008 @6:12 pm

    "Joe Six-Pack" "Hockey Mom"

DRINK, I'll figure out what rules that fits under better.

  9. Grandy  •  Oct 2, 2008 @6:14 pm

Just a sprawling, godawful anecdote from Biden about his buddy at the gas station.

  10. Clay  •  Oct 2, 2008 @6:14 pm

Thank God there's no "darn right" rule.

  11. Derrick  •  Oct 2, 2008 @6:14 pm

    ANECDOTE ALERT.

    DRINK!

  12. Derrick  •  Oct 2, 2008 @6:16 pm

Palin's charisma is showing though. Despite the fact that she's pulling all sorts of figures out of her ass.

  13. Derrick  •  Oct 2, 2008 @6:16 pm

And then Biden shut that shit down. Give him credit, he was ready for that.

  14. Derrick  •  Oct 2, 2008 @6:19 pm

I have a feeling the middle class is going to get a lot of free handjobs tonight.

  15. Derrick  •  Oct 2, 2008 @6:20 pm

I see Palin is going to rape Reagan's corpse with a smile tonight too.

  16. Derrick  •  Oct 2, 2008 @6:23 pm

Biden ended a litany of numbers I didn't understand with a good dig on the Bridge to Nowhere.

  17. Derrick  •  Oct 2, 2008 @6:26 pm

Biden just spoke for 5 minutes I didn't undertand any of it. This debate is going all over the place. Both candidates are talking about random shit and I don't know what the question is.

And no, Palin doesn't have "I FIGHT TEH OIL COMPANIEZ" cred.

  18. Clay  •  Oct 2, 2008 @6:28 pm

I think it's starting to look like it might backfire. That smile and wink papering over a dodge is happening a little too often, and the charisma is starting to look affected.

Joe is losing me in the numbers, too.

  19. Derrick  •  Oct 2, 2008 @6:29 pm

I'm not sure that bringing up McCain's stunt last week is a good idea, Governor.

  20. Derrick  •  Oct 2, 2008 @6:31 pm

A simple summary of Biden's response:

    [21:27] gellar|bidnez: 'I have no idea'

  21. Clay  •  Oct 2, 2008 @6:33 pm

    It's a blather-off!

  22. Derrick  •  Oct 2, 2008 @6:34 pm

Palin wants us not to argue about what causes Global Climate Change, but rather how to "positively change the impacts"

DRINK. DON'T QUESTION, JUST DO IT.

  23. Grandy  •  Oct 2, 2008 @6:35 pm

They're both talking furiously out of their asses right now. It's mezmerizing.

  24. Grandy  •  Oct 2, 2008 @6:36 pm

Palin is from an energy producing state – I did not know this.

  25. Derrick  •  Oct 2, 2008 @6:37 pm

If it's down to an ass contest, Palin will win.

  26. Grandy  •  Oct 2, 2008 @6:38 pm

Joe might need to shut up about this clean coal technology.

  27. Derrick  •  Oct 2, 2008 @6:38 pm

I didn't know coal could be clean.

  28. Grandy  •  Oct 2, 2008 @6:42 pm

Gay marriage answers – a race to see who could fall all over themselves more quickly.

  29. Derrick  •  Oct 2, 2008 @6:43 pm

The whole gay marriage exchange was BITTERLY disappointing. Biden danced the Civil Union line, and Palin danced the "I hate Homos but I have lots of diverse friends" bullshit. Just an infuriating exchange all around.

  30. Derrick  •  Oct 2, 2008 @6:47 pm

gellar once again summarizes everything brilliantly.

[21:42] gellar|bidnez: YOURE BOTH THE SAME
[21:42] gellar|bidnez: SHUT THE FUCK UP
[21:42] gellar|bidnez: also you both hate homos

  31. Grandy  •  Oct 2, 2008 @6:48 pm

I thought by diverse she meant "I'm friends with people who don't own any technology, and you can guess how they feel about the bible!" Who knew.

The moderator, IMO, should have pressed Palin harder on her "I'd never deny visitation rights, etc but no marriage!" comments. Fuck the "you can define it however you want" bullshit. No, I just want to talk about the little piece of paper me and my gorilla sign down at the court house that says we're married.

  32. Grandy  •  Oct 2, 2008 @6:50 pm

Now that we're onto foreign affairs, I'll vote for whoever makes a Team America World Police reference first.

  33. Derrick  •  Oct 2, 2008 @6:56 pm

Biden is falling right into the trap. He's talking too much. Everyone knows you're smart on Foreign Policy, Joe. You don't need to expand on it. KEEP IT SHORT AND SWEET.

  34. PLW  •  Oct 2, 2008 @6:59 pm

I never would have guessed that all my drinks for "change" and "reform" would come from Palin.

Also, "The Past is a Prologue." Awesome.

  35. Grandy  •  Oct 2, 2008 @6:59 pm

Palin admires you, Derrick, for pointing this things out.

  36. Derrick  •  Oct 2, 2008 @7:04 pm

    Damn straight.

This foreign policy thing is wearing Biden out. He just looks a bit tired now. What's he talking about now, Bosnia? Good lord. Palin's been cocking up, but it's rope-a-dope at this point.

  37. Derrick  •  Oct 2, 2008 @7:06 pm

    "WASHINGTON INSIDER"

    DRINK

  38. Grandy  •  Oct 2, 2008 @7:07 pm

In fairness, if we want to discuss McCain's age, it's also worth while to point out that Biden looks old as fuck.

In unrelated news, I appreciate Palin trying to avoid being Smarmy.

  39. Derrick  •  Oct 2, 2008 @7:11 pm

Palin seems really interested in bringing up Biden's statements in prior debates again and again.

Biden is also ranting way too much, they're practically commercial breaks for me.

  40. Derrick  •  Oct 2, 2008 @7:12 pm

    "WASILLA TO MAIN STREET"

    DRINK

  41. Grandy  •  Oct 2, 2008 @7:13 pm

I can picture Joe "Blue" Biden likes to hang out at Home Depot yessiree. He's legit.

  42. Grandy  •  Oct 2, 2008 @7:15 pm

This is way past a 3rd grader's bed time.

  43. Derrick  •  Oct 2, 2008 @7:15 pm

Name-dropping an elementary school class means you DRINK

  44. PLW  •  Oct 2, 2008 @7:15 pm

Dog-gone-it! That's got to be worth a drink.

  45. PLW  •  Oct 2, 2008 @7:16 pm

Did she say the vice-president works with children with special needs? Also, was she talking about changing the constitution to strengthen the role of the VP?

  46. Derrick  •  Oct 2, 2008 @7:16 pm

Everything is worth a drink, these Scrabble champs have thrown all my rules out the window.

  47. PLW  •  Oct 2, 2008 @7:18 pm

It looks like she is serious about interpreting the constitution "flexibly."

  48. Grandy  •  Oct 2, 2008 @7:21 pm

I'm too stunned to comment on that last section.

  49. Grandy  •  Oct 2, 2008 @7:22 pm

If Palin wants to say "we support equal rights" like that, the moderator should throw teh gays in her face.

  50. PLW  •  Oct 2, 2008 @7:23 pm

Man..I'm glad "oil producing state" wasn't on the list. Also, how can Alaska be the heartland of America? Imagine if your heart was 1000s of miles away from your body and separated by Canada.

  51. Derrick  •  Oct 2, 2008 @7:23 pm

I don't know what the hell they're talking about now. I might as well just log back into Warhammer.

  52. Clay  •  Oct 2, 2008 @7:24 pm

    Wow, Biden nearly lost it.

  53. PLW  •  Oct 2, 2008 @7:24 pm

"He is the man we need to leave."

    Classic.

Also, "Greed and corruption on Wall Street."

  54. Derrick  •  Oct 2, 2008 @7:25 pm

The "maverick" rule is going to send me to the hospital.

  55. Grandy  •  Oct 2, 2008 @7:26 pm

I wish they were debating the various D&D rules editions. God that would rock.

  56. Grandy  •  Oct 2, 2008 @7:28 pm

God Palin looks stupid every time she says "BLAAARG EVIL WALL STREET". Granted, I think alot of voters will eat that up.

  57. Grandy  •  Oct 2, 2008 @7:29 pm

F this. I'm off to bed.

  58. PLW  •  Oct 2, 2008 @7:32 pm

    What's a "national security freedom"?

  59. Derrick  •  Oct 2, 2008 @7:39 pm

If Palin's goal was to shore up concerns about her being an idiot, this debate went a long way to help with that. I'm biased, so I don't think it did a particularly good job. I got the feeling that she was overeager to spout off all the figures she memorized in the week-long intensive debate camp. So I don't think she was able to COMPLETELY shake off the "lightweight" reputation. But she did enough to do what she needed to do.

Biden's performance felt a little underwhelming. His ONE task was to not talk too much, and he went CRAZY during the foreign policy section. Look, everyone knows he's the MAN with it comes to that, that's why he needed to keep the comments short and succinct, cutting down anything Palin brought up. Palin said some outrageously stupid stuff, and Biden failed to nail her ass to the wall. He did close strongly though.

Overall I think it was a tie. I'd give a slight win to Biden, but it's a disappointing win. Like when the defending national champion barely squeaks by a division II team. Therefore, I think it's an overall win for McCain, and I expect a slight uptick in his numbers in the following week.

Everything depends on what SNL does.

  60. PLW  •  Oct 3, 2008 @5:53 am

Randomly selected subjects on three polls show Biden winning:

    CNN/Opinion Research Biden 51 Palin 36
    CBS Biden 46 Palin 21
    Fox Biden 61 Palin 39

In the CBS poll, of the uncommitted voters, 18% now say they will vote Obama/Biden, 10% now say McCain/Palin.

  61. Andrew  •  Oct 7, 2008 @6:06 am

I can't believe it's time for another debate already. I worry for Derrick's liver.

  62. Derrick  •  Oct 7, 2008 @6:57 am

Just my luck that these debates come during one of my busiest times of the year. I'll try and get some rules up but I won't be live-blogging it.
