I wanted the "Prom in 'Nam". I got "Under the Sea".

Effluvia

I've noticed that the GOP has gone, to use a technical term, completely go-nuts apeshit over Sarah Palin.  It's weird.   And since this Friday, I've been trying to figure out why I felt that way.  And I think I've figured it out.

Do you guys remember Senior Prom?  There was always one guy who didn't get his first choice, or 2nd, or third.  Anyway, he ended up going to the Senior Prom with a Sophmore or something.  And he tries to play if off like she was his first choice, and goes ALL OUT to convince EVERYONE of this.  She gets a corsage the size of her head.  The limo is extra long.  The guy dances a little too close, a little too grope-y.  You know what I'm sayin'?  And in doing so, he only further emphasizes the fact that she very clearly was not the first choice.

    Odd.

Right about now, I suspect that many Republicans view Palin as the protagonist and McCain as the undesirable sophomore.

I'm inclined to agree, esspecially with what I interpreted as a very awkward moment when McCain came on stage after her speech.

    It just reeks of overcompensation.

If there was overcompensation, it was unnecessary, because whatever Ezra thinks ("mean spirited" is the best we could come up with?) she gave a hell of a speech.

Andrew Sullivan is particularly grumpy, mean spirited, and defensive this morning. I'll bet he mixed valium with his sex-on-the-beaches and smoked at least two packs of Salem Slim Lights last night.

Andrew Sullivan is unreadable for me at this point. It's gotten a bit shrill, and most importantly (to me) it's gotten boring.

But it's not Palin herself that I find odd, it's more the reaction of everyone around her. She gave a great speech, one that I found nearly as formidable and star-making as Obama's in 2004. After her annoucement, the WOOOOOOOO's were so loud and prolonged that I immediately got suspicious.

The WOOOOOs at the outset were as much relief that it wasn't Romney, or Lieberman, or some other machinelike Biden equivalent (to say nothing of a McCain equivalent, though I think McCain's plenty different from those three).

As for Sullivan, I find the Daily Kos blog a more readable, reliable, and responsible, source of blogging inspiration, and from time to time a source of material for my own poor attempts at blogging, than Sullivan. Since the beginning of this year, he has degenerated into self-parody. He is truly the most wretched example of self-absorbed narcissism, off-the-cuff unconsidered weirdness, heart on the sleeve raw nerve emotion, amateurism, and every other criticism that can be leveled by professional journalists at bloggers.

And yet he is a professional journalist. Imagine that.
