Bidenism of the Day: August 28, 2008

Politics & Current Events

NOTE: I, ON BEHALF OF MYSELF, HEREBY CLAIM COPYRIGHT AND PENDING TRADEMARK (TO THE EXTENT APPLICABLE) IN THE CONCEPTS AND TERMS "BIDENISM" AND "BIDENISMS".  THE CONCEPT OF A BIDENISM IS HEREBY DEFINED AS A STUPID, FALSE, OR OTHERWISE EMBARRASSING THING SAID BY DEMOCRATIC VICE PRESIDENTIAL NOMINEE JOSEPH P. BIDEN, QUOTED FOR THE PURPOSE OF MOCKING SAID VICE PRESIDENTIAL NOMINEE AND THEREBY MAKING MYSELF LOOK CLEVER (HE'S SORT OF A LOW-HANGING FRUIT) AND, UPON HIS ACCESSION TO THE VICE PRESIDENCY, ASSEMBLING SAID STUPID THINGS INTO A QUICKIE BOOK FOR SALE TO REPUBLICANS, WHICH WILL MAKE ME STINKING RICH!!!

"George Mc — excuse me, John McCain, will give us – Freudian slip!" Joseph P. Biden, August 27, 2008.

This is stupid because at a Democratic convention it brings to mind George McGovern rather than George Bush, conjuring up memories of Democratic weakness on national security issues.  It is also stupid because bringing up George McGovern raises visions of crushing Democratic electoral defeat, a bad thing to remember at a Democratic convention.  Finally, it is stupid because John McCain's politics are nothing like those of George McGovern.  McCain is a warrior politician, while McGovern wished to end a war.

Therefore Joseph P. Biden is stupid.

If that was done on purpose I think the speech writer (/ing staff, whatever) needs to suffer considerably.

If it wasn't done on purpose. . . well I guess you are going to get paid either way so good for you.

Yeah, that was about on a level with whoever it was saying "Barney Fag" rather than "Barney Frank."

The dig at Slate is deeply appreciated. Their "Bushisms" should have died at least seven years ago. They don't even make sense any more.

The problem with Bidenisms is that someone has usually said them before.

I am, however, guessing that more people's brains went to George Bush than went to George McGovern. Hell, they mixed up Joe and Eugene McCarthy in a memorial video this year and barely anyone outside of Minnesota noticed.

John Kerry made a very similar slip during his speech, I noticed, which made me suspect this was all some "cunning" plan….

That's nice but Kerryisms has been done. Bidenisms are Benjaminisms.
