There's nothing like re-opening an 11-attorney law office on a Monday morning with a phone system that isn't fully installed and that no one understands, complete with new extensions that nobody knows. Much running up and down our suddenly much longer halls was done.
For some reason I am viewed as the firm's technical guru, and therefore my already shaky morning equilibrium was repeatedly battered by requests for assistance to help people set up their computers in their new offices, troubleshoot the office wi-fi, figure out why the printers wouldn't work, and otherwise hold everyone's hand until our actually competent tech guy got here. I'm afraid my temper may have gotten short; people were noticeably avoiding my office all afternoon.
Anyway, the brief is not yet done. If I never read another word about the deprivation of honest services doctrine under 18 U.S.C. section 1346, that will be just fine.
Meanwhile, links:
On Monday, in a rather significant California constitutional case, the California Supreme Court determined unanimously that doctors could not rely on their religious beliefs as a justification to violate California's anti-discrimination act, in this particular instance by refusing to provide fertility treatment to a lesbian couple. The opinion is here.
Speaking of gay . . . George Lucas wanted a gay Hutt character? Really? Is that some kind of fetish? (Via.)
Things that make me stabby, part 2742: people who say obnoxious things, and then when the marketplace of ideas responds with ridicule, cry about being "silenced." Part 2742: nominally libertarian, actually statist bloggers who congratulate them.
John McCain: just throwing away the nerd vote.
So, how's that huge roundup of Texas polygamists doing? The one that was, you know, for the children? Any strong abuse cases? Anyone? Anyone? McMartin?
You know, I've learned to live under the anti-drug regime — but when they come after a man's bacon dogs, they go too. damn. far.
