Count me in with Ezra. When I travel, I try to stop and visit little restaurants that have obviously been there thirty or forty years, rather than a restaurant of the sort that hires me as a client (I do quite a bit of food poisoning defense for chains). It's hit or miss, but the hits are more rewarding, and we'd have Youtube (ecch) with or without the chains.

Actually, I think Youtube is a pretty interesting example. How much of the stuff on there is just repackaging or outright repurposing of generic content? Is one 2 girls & a cup reaction video really that different from another? Youtube is the ultimate 500 channels and nothing on experience.

I just think it's a shame that we are slowly becoming a homogenized cookie cutter culture. Our neighborhoods are losing their unique character. I would rather a North Beach or Mission keep their unique flavors, than see a Pasta Pomodoro and El Pollo Loco pass for local flavor. I can see how someone in Omaha might feel differently, but I would be willing to bet that even in some pretty far flung corners there were pockets of quirky stuff that is slowly being marginalized.

My dad bought a .38 Dectective's Special at Long's Drug in Colorado Springs. I went with him and everything!

Horse Racing? I think it's a relic that we'll do fine to leave behind (albeit well documented for history's sake).

"faceless, generic modern life."

You mean, like You Tube and Popehat? As compared to the 3 networks and the overwhelming individuality of expression we see in the world portrayed in Leave it to Beaver and My 3 Sons.

Do you think the average American has more or less access to diverse products, services, culture, friends, experiences, and opportunities than they did 50 years ago? 20? 10? 1?

Sure 2 towns are more likely to look a like, than they were then, but so what? I'm not longer limited to what I can find in the town next door.

That sucks. When I lived in SF I spent many an enjoyable (albeit costly) afternoon at Bay Meadows.

Gambling tip:Handicapping horses and Quaaludes do not mix.
