Introducing the Irrationally Infallible Guide to San Francisco!

Effluvia

I'm kicking off a series that is destined to be as relevant as Ken's encyclopedic collection of Creed CDs. My 2 teenage cousins are going to be spending the next 3 weeks living with me. During that time, we are going to be doing a lot of the touristy things around the City I love. So, I thought I would write up some guides to these places along with some small tips, a little history and whatever else I can think of. And to add some ironic detachment to the whole thing, I'll have the girls give each place a one sentence review. Get ready for a slew of moments like "Yeah, I guess the Diego Rivera murals in Coit Tower were sort of cool." For even more eclecticism, for some events, we will be joined by my friend Olaf from Germany. When he comes along, I'll get his one sentence review as well. He's already told me that he will only go to Alcatraz if I can assure him there are no para-military commandos with poison gas on there.

Who knows, maybe this can become a regular feature. Brian and Mike can do it for Jersey and Ken can do it for Los Angeles. I'm not sure which of those is funnier.

Stay tuned: Wednesday is a visit to Berkeley & the Cal campus and Friday is Alcatraz and Fisherman's Wharf.

I think it's a great idea, and I'm looking forward to reading it.

I took Ruth there for her birthday a couple of years ago – it was first visit in 10 years having lived there for 20, and I definitely wanted to spend some time with her off the beaten tourist path. I was disappointed that the Camera Obscura out by the Cliff House had closed – has it reopened? Also (and you probably already know this) the Musee Mechanique has moved to the Wharf – we stopped in after our visit to Alcatraz.

Make sure to stop by City Lights/Vesuvios, and of course, The Saloon.

Is there even anything to see in New Jersey? There's Atlantic City, but my vague impression of it (having never been there) has always been a run down, cheaper version of Vegas. I suppose Morristown might be interesting. Then… ah… what else?

Don't worry we will definitely do some off the beaten path stuff. I give a pretty decent walking tour of the financial district and chinatown (which includes the Church of Scientology!)

Oh, and the agenda has already changed, Alcatraz is not this Friday, but Muir Woods (perhaps the most beautiful place I have ever been) is on for Friday.

Hey, good idea. Hope you already have your Alcatraz tickets. We just found out the hard way that they sell out at least 2 weeks in advance this time of year. Oh, I just read your last comment. Guess you found out too.
