Good News for Fans of Rock Band

Gaming

Rock Band 2 has just been announced.  But that's not the good news.

No, the good news is that Harmonix, the makers of the game and its sequel, are not going to turn the original Rock Band into a piece of planned obsolescent junk overnight.

Backwards Compatibility
Songs you purchased for RB1 will work for RB2. Future RB songs will work for both games.

Considering that Rock Band is the most expensive game I've ever considered purchasing, almost as expensive as a Wii, this is very good news for a game that's made downloaded content one of its cornerstones.

There's plenty more description of new features and better hardware at the link above.  Fans of Rock Band, and those who purchase its downloadable content for Xbox or Playstation, should also check out Chris Grenard's comprehensive Rock Band Downloadable Content Database for thorough reviews of all of the songs available for purchase.

Today is going to be plastic instrument day, as you will see shortly. :) I noticed with some surprise that this past Tuesday, with the release of three Weezer songs, Harmonix had surpassed the 150 mark in "songs available to download". Seriously – they released a game with 58 tracks, which was good. But since then, they've made more than 150 more songs available.

THAT is how you do DLC.

Great! Still not available in .au and they're already planning the next one.

You're in for a treat when it does arrive Bruce. It's the best social / party game I've ever played, attracting women and non-geeks as it does, and the music selection is better than any version of Guitar Hero if you're a man of a certain age and tastes. Check out Grenard's review site above or on our sidebar to see what's available after the first 58 songs.

It combines the best of Guitar Hero and karaoke, and more. Even with the ruinous price, I'm glad that my neighbor across the street bought it.

How did you know I was a man of certain age and tastes?

And the review websites are just taunting me so I don't go there any more.
