The Helter-Skelter wing of Hillary Clinton supporters continue to strive to make themselves immune to satire, thus joining luminaries like Fox News and most of the right-wing blogosphere. Their operating principle seems to be "You plan to write of parody of us in which we do something crazy, thus illuminating our excess? Fuck you. We're actually going to do it first."
In this particular instance the feral wing of Hillary fandom is incensed that Barack Obama has appointed former Clinton campaign manager Patti Solis Doyle to help pick his VP. This is a coup for Solis Doyle, good politics for Obama, and fairly predictable, given that she is from Chicago and is a long-time friend to Obama advisor David Axelrod.
Nothing remarkable, right? A typical lateral move by a political operative.
Well, no, not under the rules of the Hillary Helter-Skelter wing, which are derived from a bastardization of the the teachings of Miss Manners, Dr. Phil, and the Unibomber.
Armando aka Big Tent Democrat at Talk Left calls it a "slap in the face" and quotes approvingly a Hillary supporter who says that it's a "calculated decision" to send a message that Hillary is not welcome as VP. The Talk Left poo-flinging monkeys are out in force in the comments: "It was intended for spite. These are petty little children. I saw that very early on. It's Bush all over agaon.[sic]" Elsewhere an angry Clinton supporter told the New York Observer that this was "the biggest fuck you I have ever seen in politics." Others "seethe" and are "shocked."
Because, after all, American politics should be like high school. If you're friendly to Jane, who had a fight with Cindy, it doesn't matter if Jane is a good person or deserving of niceness — you're still STABBING CINDY IN THE BACK, DAMMIT, HOW COULD YOU DO THIS TO ME?
Seriously, what do these people think they are accomplishing? Hillary Clinton achieved the amazing task of being the first credible and electable female Presidential candidate in American history, came quite close to prevailing, and changed the landscape permanently. Yet there's a good chance that this wing of her supporters will continue to act like this up to the election and that when people think back to the notion of a female candidate in general or Hillary in particular, what they'll remember is the stench of crazy.
