The Horrific Choice Between Racism and Incompetence

Culture, Politics & Current Events, WTF?

Colorado State Rep Douglas Bruce (R), has been in tight spots before. There's the time he kicked a photographer for taking of picture of him praying for instance. Or the time he wouldn't sponsor a resolution honoring military veterans because "resolutions don't mean jack" (that's paraphrasing). This time, during a debate on illegal immigration, specifically, helping immigrant workers get temporary federal visas, he blurted out this gem:

"I would like to have the opportunity to state at the microphone why I don't think we need 5,000 more illiterate peasants in Colorado," Bruce said.

There's two approaches to comment like this. Either say you're a racist, and "seek help"; or say you're an idiot. It's a tough choice. But Bruce, TRAILBLAZER that he is, isn't going to play by THE MAN's playbook. No sir, he's got his own agenda. He said he was technically right.

"I looked up 'illiterate' in the dictionary and it means somebody who is lacking in formal education or is unable to read and write," he said. "I don't think these people who are planning to come over here and pick potatoes or peaches are likely to have much of a formal education. I looked up the word 'peasant.' The word 'peasant' means a person who works in agricultural fields."

As my father was fond of saying, "Holy Christmas". Under what kind of situation would a defense like that EVER work? His comment and subsequent defense are making the rounds in the blogosphere as racist, and therefore Mr. Bruce is himself racist. I don't think so. I'm falling squarely on the other choice: he's an idiot.

It's always better to be an idiot than racist. Idiots can get re-elected, we've seen this time and time again. Racists… not so much. I suppose if you come from a district of illiterate peasants, it's possible. There's another horrible consequence of his defense: by using it, he's leaving himself WIDE OPEN for cheap shots using that same defense.

For instance, one can call him a "bile-filled douche" and then break it down. "Bile-filled" meaning, to be filled with a bitter, yellow or green fluid secreted from the liver. And "douche" meaning a device used to squirt liquid into the body for hygienic reasons (usually referred to it's use in the female anatomy). So, by calling Rep Bruce a device squirting bitter yellow fluid into the body (usually female)… you see what I'm saying? The possibilities are endless.

A peasant would know that when your find yourself inside a hole, it's time to stop digging.

I wish more people would say "resolutions are bullshit."

That's no excuse for acting like an ass and then engaging in an embarrassing self-justification, though.
