A Public Service Announcement to Readers in the District of Columbia

Politics & Current Events

If in the next couple of weeks a policeman comes to your door to request a "voluntary" search of the premises, you do not have to let him enter. Unless he has a search warrant, signed by a judge. Politely, respectfully, demand to see his warrant. If he does not have one, thank him and send him on his way.

If the policeman promises you "amnesty" for anything found in your home, he is LYING.

Again, you do not have to, and probably should not, allow a policeman to enter your home without a warrant, ever, unless you needed the policeman and called in the first place. If the circumstances are such that the policeman doesn't require a warrant to enter, you will know this because he will enter without knocking, with his gun drawn.

Hat tip: Hit & Run.

I don't, incidentally, approve of the site linked at the beginning of this post, with its "high quality English language" news analysis. (Thanks for letting me know it isn't Spanish.) But in this case I feel that its harsh rhetoric is entirely justified.

I'll bet Adams Morgan isn't being raided.

I agree 100% — this is thuggery, and I hope people get the word out to DC residents to tell the cops to fuck off.

Allow the cynical portion of me to comment, however, that it is only the element of guns that will make this position palatable in a regrettably large portion of the Right. (Definitely not talking about you here, Patrick.) We hear a lot of "I don't care about searches/wiretaps/surveillance because I have nothing to hide." Some conservatives react with dismay when lawyers spread the eminently sensible advice to shut up when the cops come calling. But threaten to search for guns? Oh no you DINT.

And I'm sure that the blogger news network, which I linked, is of that persuasion Ken. Another argument I hate is, boiled down, "if he didn't do it why was he charged?" And I'm sure the right would make it if we were discussing a pistol illegally seized from a mosque.

But the BNN did use the term "jack boots" and the jack boots fit in this case, so DC should wear them.
