I got the chance to take a look at the very first issue of my organization’s magazine, from 1950. In it, the President of the Academy had a stern warning for family physicians everywhere. I include it below, in it’s entirety and without comment (because it is that good!)

It may be repetitious to write about the dangers to our American way of life but with groups known as Fabians, Communists, Socialists, Extreme Liberals, and Leftists working like beavers to expand their teachings, I cannot help but caution you at every opportunity. This is a crucial year in medicine, and it is imperative that the majority members of the State Senate and Assembly be our friends and willing to work in our behalf. Both candidates for governor have openly stated their favor for Compulsory Health Insurance. From our point of view they are not friends of Medicine.

The American Academy of General Practice is not a political body nor a pressure group, but when the very existence of private practice is in jeopardy it is our duty to devote a part of each day talking with patients, clubs, friends, in fact to anyone who will listen to our message of the dangers of Socialized Medicine.

Do not be confused with propaganda but be alert to our danger. Do not shirk from your duty or procrastinate; do not pass this off lightly, for it is later than you think.
